Renk Zinciri

Sahnenin tayfından kodeğin son baytına: rengin nerede üretildiği, nerede yorumlandığı ve hangi ayarın zincirin neresini geri dönülmez biçimde değiştirdiği.

Yunus Türkyılmaz · 4 Eylül 2026 · 11 dakikalık okuma

Ölçüm ile yorumun ayrıldığı an

Buradan çıkan sonuç Fujifilm'in yaklaşımını anlaşılır kılıyor: madem "ölçüldüğü gibi üretmek" zaten ulaşılamaz, geriye hangi uzlaşmanın seçileceği kalır.

Fujifilm'in dahili F-Log kaydı RAW değildir.

Fujifilm'in yayımladığı iki teknik doküman her iki eğrinin dönüşüm formülünü ve sabitlerini tam veriyor. Bu, farkı pazarlama ifadelerine güvenmeden hesaplamayı mümkün kılıyor.

SENTEZ BULGUSU 1

Yedi ayar, zincirdeki yerleri

The Colour Chain

From the spectrum of the scene to the last byte of the codec: where colour is produced, where it is interpreted, and which setting changes which link irreversibly.

Yunus Türkyılmaz · 4 September 2026 · 11 min read

Where measurement parted from interpretation

The history of colour recording is one idea applied over and over: measure the scene in three bands, rebuild colour from the three measurements. Maxwell demonstrated it in 1861 with three separate filters and three projection lanterns. Your screen today, and the colour filter array in front of your sensor, apply the same principle.

The only thing that has changed is how those three measurements are taken on the same surface at the same moment. The Autochrome, patented by the Lumière brothers in 1903, solved it with dyed potato-starch grains scattered over a glass plate — an additive mosaic screen. In 1935 Kodachrome coated three colour-sensitive emulsions onto the same base: the first commercial integral tripack.

The backbone of this argument

All three layers of Kodachrome are black and white. The colour is not in the film; it is created during processing by colour couplers added to the developers — which is why the long, multi-step K-14 process was necessary.

So in 1935 measurement and interpretation were separated. On a Fujifilm body, the relationship between raw data and a film simulation is a direct continuation of the relationship between the exposed film and the K-14 bath. Every practical conclusion in this piece is a derivative of a single question: does this setting touch the measurement, or the interpretation?

The Autochrome and a sensor's colour filter array solve the same problem: each point measures only one band, and the two missing bands are estimated from the neighbours. In the Autochrome the eye and viewing distance do that; in digital, demosaicing does. The X-Trans versus Bayer argument is the continuation of an argument that began in 1903.

Why no camera is “correct”

Colour is not a property of light. The property of light is its spectral power distribution; colour is the response that distribution produces in the human visual system. The visible spectrum is continuous, that is, infinite-dimensional; three cone types reduce it to three numbers. The unavoidable consequence is metamerism: two physically different spectra can look like the same colour because the three cone responses come out the same.

The condition a camera must satisfy to be considered colorimetrically correct is well defined: the sensor's spectral sensitivity curves must be expressible as a linear transform of the colour-matching functions of the CIE 1931 2° observer — the Luther–Ives condition.

The consequence

Real colour filters are made from dyes and interference layers, and manufacturable curves cannot be an exact linear transform of the human cones. No commercial camera fully satisfies the Luther condition. The 3×3 transform known as the colour matrix is the compromise that minimises the error of that approximation for a given illuminant and a given set of colours.

That makes Fujifilm's approach legible: since “reproducing it as measured” is unreachable in the first place, what remains is choosing which compromise to make. Fujifilm describes that choice openly as an aesthetic decision.

White balance is not a correction, it is an interpretation

The human visual system sees white as white across a wide range of illuminant colours; this is colour constancy, and its mechanism is chromatic adaptation. The classic model is the von Kries transform: a separate gain is applied to each cone type's response so that the appearance of the reference white stays constant. The camera implementation is direct — gains are applied to the R, G and B channels so that a neutral surface comes out R=G=B.

The Kelvin scale only approximates the blue–amber axis; a green–magenta deviation needs tint or a WB shift as well. Under mixed LED, tungsten and daylight, a single white balance cannot correct every object — metamerism remains.

A critical distinction

Fujifilm's internal F-Log recording is not raw. ISO and white balance are baked into the recording. The HDMI raw output is a separate path; there, in-camera development is not applied and white balance can be part of the interpretation in post.

What that means in practice: when shooting internal log, “I'll fix it completely in post” does not hold. If a sensor channel has clipped, that information does not come back; lifting a weak channel heavily raises colour noise.

Colour processing before the sensor

A lens is not a neutral pipe. Every glass surface, coating and air-glass transition is spectrally selective; the colour distribution of the light leaving the lens differs from what entered it.

The f-stop is a geometric ratio — focal length divided by entrance pupil diameter — and does not account for light lost inside. The T in T-stop stands for transmission, that is, the light actually passed. Every cinema lens is measured individually and its T value is marked for that specific lens. Two lenses both set to f/1.4 can send different amounts of light to the sensor; that is one reason exposure does not match across cameras in a multi-camera shoot.

Anti-reflective coatings do not work equally at all wavelengths. The patent literature describes coatings designed to transmit the red region at a higher rate, with the reflection minimum typically placed around 610 nm. Part of what a manufacturer calls “colour character” is decided not in the glass but in a few hundred nanometres of layers on top of it.

To that add the filter stack in front of the sensor — infrared cut, birefringent layers and cover glass. The thickness and spectral behaviour of that stack affect the edge behaviour and colour shift of wide-angle lenses, particularly on short-flange bodies.

The sensor: array, format, generation

X-Trans versus Bayer

Bayer is a 2×2 pattern: two green, one red, one blue. X-Trans uses a 6×6 pattern — fixed and repeating — containing a ratio of 5 green, 2 red and 2 blue.

Colour filter array

PropertyBayerX-Trans

In a Bayer array some horizontal and vertical lines contain no red or blue pixel at all, which can produce false colour. In X-Trans, at least one R, one G and one B falls on every line within every six pixels. There is a cost: demosaicing is roughly a quarter heavier; this may be one reason Fujifilm uses Bayer rather than X-Trans in its medium-format bodies, though the company has not given its reasons. In a raw workflow, the quality of X-Trans demosaicing varies noticeably from one software vendor to another.

What APS-C determines

The definition of dynamic range is physical: DR = log₂(well capacity / noise floor).

Shot noise comes from the statistics of photons and has nothing to do with the sensor. Read noise belongs to the electronics and is most visible in the shadows. Well capacity is limited by pixel volume, that is, directly by surface area. The difference between APS-C and full frame comes not from colour science or the processor but from roughly 2.3× the area. At the same technology generation, APS-C collects about one stop less light; that cannot be closed, only hidden with noise reduction. For reference, the measured APS-C ceiling: 24.5 bits of colour depth, 14.6 EV of landscape dynamic range.

The fifth generation: HS versus HR

On the X-H2S the sensor is read roughly four times faster than the previous generation, and the X-Processor 5 offers around twice the processing speed.

Encoding capacity versus measured range

This section is the real payoff of putting the documents side by side: what neither could say alone becomes visible once the numbers sit together.

The range the curves encode

The two technical documents Fujifilm publishes give the full transform formula and constants for both curves. That makes it possible to compute the difference without relying on marketing language.

Synthesis finding 1

All three stops that F-Log2 adds are in the highlights. The shadow side is identical on both curves: 7.66 stops. Moving to F-Log2 does not improve your shadow noise.

What the sensor actually delivers

Fujifilm states “14+ stops” for F-Log2 on the X-H2S. On the same body, CineD measured 12.2 stops at an SNR=2 threshold and 13.6 stops at SNR=1, shooting 4K25 ProRes HQ, F-Log2, ISO 1250. These numbers do not contradict each other; they measure different things. “The lowest detectable signal” and “clean, usable shadow” are not the same number.

F-Log encodes 13.00 · F-Log2 encodes 16.00 · Fujifilm's claim 14.00 · measured at SNR=1 13.60 · measured at SNR=2 12.20 (stops).

Encoding capacity is not the range the sensor can fill. In the line above, the first two values are the range the curves can encode (computed from the official constants); the rest are the manufacturer's claim and the values measured in the laboratory. The gap in between is the part of the curve the sensor never fills.

Synthesis finding 2

F-Log2 can encode 16.00 stops, but the usable range measured on the same body is 12.2 to 13.6 stops. Roughly 2.4 to 3.8 stops of the curve are never filled.

In practice: using F-Log2 in a scene the sensor cannot handle does not recover information that does not exist — it only spreads the information that does exist across fewer code values. In a scene with heavy shadows and compressed highlights, F-Log2 gives less code resolution than F-Log because it pushes the midtones into lower code values. Neither document says this on its own; it only appears when they are read together.

Gamut, and F-Log2 C

Both curves use F-Gamut, whose primaries are identical to ITU-R BT.2020: R (0.708/0.292), G (0.170/0.797), B (0.131/0.046), white D65. Fujifilm gives an explicit reason for not choosing a wider gamut: to avoid the tonal jump that occurs when converting from a wide gamut to a narrow one. F-Log2 C is not more dynamic range. It uses the same gamma and the same code placement as F-Log2; the difference is the wider F-Gamut C primaries. Without a correct IDT and colour management, a wide gamut is not an advantage but a risk of wrong colour conversion.

Seven settings and where they sit

Settings are not independent boxes. The decisive question is the same every time: does this setting change how the sensor captures photons, or does it interpret data already captured?

The first column is “no” all the way down. That is not a coincidence: none of these seven settings changes the light the sensor collects. Only three things change the light — aperture, shutter and the light in the scene.

DR modes: an exposure decision

DR200 and DR400 are not a “dynamic range extension” trick. The camera deliberately underexposes, then lifts only the lower tones in processing. The critical detail is where the ISO requirement comes from: normally at high ISO the sensor signal is amplified; with DR enabled that amplification is skipped and one or two stops of lift are moved to the processor. That is why nothing is lost from the sensor's dynamic range.

It varies by body

The thresholds are not universal. On the X-T5, DR200 requires at least ISO 250 and DR400 at least ISO 500 in video, and they are available only on the processed film-simulation path. On the X-H2S the thresholds are 320/640. Recipes should not be copied between bodies.

Also, “DR400 + F-Log2” do not add up as two separate dynamic-range increases. In log recording you use the log curve and correct exposure tools rather than the DR menu.

Sharpening and noise: the same information from opposite directions

Sharpening raises high spatial frequencies; noise is also high-frequency. Noise reduction suppresses high frequencies; fine texture is also high-frequency. With both enabled, one partially undoes the other and textureless surfaces appear in between. Sharpness does not produce detail, it produces edge contrast; noise reduction cannot separate signal from noise perfectly. In video this weighs more heavily because compression follows. To an encoder, noise is an incompressible signal and consumes the bit budget. In stills you can tolerate noise for the sake of detail; in video, noise degrades compression and so takes detail with it indirectly.

On the codec side

8-bit offers 256 code levels per channel, 10-bit offers 1024. Those numbers are not “the number of visible colours” nor the precision of the ADC. 10-bit carries the wide range of a log image in smaller quantisation steps and lowers the risk of banding in gradients. At 4:2:2 chroma is sampled at half horizontally and full vertically; at 4:2:0 it is halved on both axes — 4:2:2 holds up better on fine colour boundaries and under heavy colour correction.

Decision order and remaining gaps

There is one operational conclusion all the documents share, and its order matters:

1. Light, lens, filter. 2. Exposure and white balance. 3. Sensor readout mode. 4. Gamma and gamut — the recording curve. 5. In-camera tone, colour, noise reduction and sharpening — the “look” layer.

For work that will be graded, the most robust strategy is correctly exposed F-Log2, a measured and locked white balance, 10-bit 4:2:2 and correct colour management. For fast delivery: a film simulation plus measured Highlight/Shadow — and accepting that in-camera settings cannot be undone.

Remaining research gaps

What none of the three documents could fill:

ISP block order. Fujifilm does not publish the order in which white balance, demosaicing, the colour matrix, the tone curve, sharpening and noise reduction are applied. The numerical curves and kernels of the settings are closed as well. The nearest route is the X-Processor patents and reverse engineering of JPEG output.

CFA spectral sensitivities. The real transmission curves of the X-Trans filters are not published; they would be needed to know what the colour matrix is compensating for.

Lens spectral transmission. Measured curves are limited; the Japanese technical documents for Fujinon cinema lenses have not been surveyed.

The historical section. The Ottoman and Renaissance pigment vocabulary — çivid, lâciverd, zırnık, jengâr and their counterparts biacca, cinabrese, azzurro della Magna — has not been worked through from primary texts.

A separate caution on dynamic range figures: the values depend on the SNR threshold, resolution, frame rate, compression and measurement method. The manufacturer's “14+” claim and the laboratory's 12.2 are different definitions and should not be compared without stating the measurement conditions.

Sources

Combined bibliography. The Fujifilm technical documents were downloaded and parsed directly; the calculations in the encoding section were made from the constants in those files. The bibliography of Colour, tone and the optical chain also includes institutional documents from CIE, EMVA, ARRI and Apple.

This is a technical study written for Color X. Measurements and derivations are based on manufacturer data sheets; sources are listed at the end.
