5.1 APS‑C neyi belirler, neyi belirlemez?

5.2 X‑Trans renk filtre dizisi

Fujifilm’in X‑Trans dizisi, Bayer’ın kısa tekrarlı 2×2 yapısından farklı, düşük periyodiklikli 6×6 yerleşim kullanır.

Fujifilm X‑H2S için sensörün önceki kuşaktan yaklaşık dört kat hızlı okunduğunu, X‑Processor 5’in yaklaşık iki kat işlem hızı sunduğunu bildirir (Fujifilm duyurusu, 31 Mayıs 2022).

CFA sensörü her fotositte tam RGB üçlüsü ölçmez.

HLG, ITU‑R BT.2100 HDR standardına uygun teslim/izleme yoludur.

8.1 Beyaz dengesi (White Balance)

Zincirde nerede? Demosaik/renk dönüşümü çevresindeki erken işleme katmanındadır. Dahili F‑Log “RAW” değildir: Fujifilm, ISO ve WB’nin kayda işlendiğini açıklar (Fujifilm Learning Centre). HDMI RAW çıkışta ise kamera içi geliştirmeler uygulanmaz; WB postta RAW yorumunun parçası olabilir.

Görüntü sonucu: Çok sıcak/soğuk WB postta global olarak çevrilebilir; fakat sensör kanallarından biri doygunluğa ulaşmışsa bilgi geri gelmez. Zayıf kanalı büyük ölçüde yükseltmek renk gürültüsünü artırır. Karışık LED/tungsten/günışığı altında tek WB bütün nesneleri düzeltemez; metamerizm kalır.

Öneri: Kontrollü sette gri kartla custom WB ölçün; kartı ana ışık altında ve konu düzleminde tutun. Planlar arasında Kelvin+tint’i kilitleyin. RAW olmayan log çekimde “postta tamamen düzeltirim” yaklaşımından kaçının. Yaratıcı sıcaklık, teknik nötrlemeden sonra look katmanında eklenebilir.

8.2 Dynamic Range: DR100/DR200/DR400

Ne yapar? Film-simülasyonu/işlenmiş video yolunda highlight kaybını azaltmak için pozlama indeksi ve ton eşlemesini değiştirir. X‑T5 video kılavuzunda AUTO yoktur; DR200 en az ISO 250, DR400 en az ISO 500 gerektirir ve yalnız “P” yani işlenmiş film-simülasyonu yolu seçiliyken kullanılabilir (X‑T5 Movie Image Quality). X‑H2S eşikleri ISO 320/640 gibi farklıdır. Bu yüzden reçete gövdeler arasında kopyalanmamalıdır.

Ne yapmaz? Fotodiyotun full‑well kapasitesini artırmaz ve yanmış sensör kanalını kurtarmaz. Daha yüksek minimum ISO, highlight payını koruyan farklı ton/pozlama yerleşiminin parçasıdır. Sonuçta orta/gölgeler yükseltildiğinde gürültü daha görünür olabilir.

Öneri: Film simülasyonu ile yüksek kontrastta DR200/400’ü highlight ölçümüyle test edin. F‑Log/F‑Log2’de DR menüsü yerine log eğrisi ve uygun pozlama araçlarını kullanın. “DR400 + F‑Log2”yi iki ayrı dinamik aralık artırımı gibi toplamayın.

8.3 Highlight / Tone Curve Highlights

8.4 Shadow / Tone Curve Shadows

Fujifilm’in ayırt edici katkısı X‑Trans örnekleme yaklaşımı ile uzun film/renk mühendisliği geleneğini işlenmiş profillerde birleştirmesidir. Ancak tek başına sensör etiketi, sonuç renginin açıklaması değildir.

Video çekiminde karar hiyerarşisi nettir: (1) ışık/lens/filtre, (2) pozlama ve WB, (3) sensör okuma modu, (4) gamma/gamut, (5) kamera içi ton‑renk‑NR‑sharpness, (6) bit derinliği/kroma/kodek, (7) post ve görüntüleme koşulu. Erken aşamada kaybedilen veri sonraki aşamada yaratılamaz. Geç aşamadaki güçlü işleme, hatayı saklayabilir ama esnekliği azaltır.

Fujifilm bağlamında en sağlam genel strateji; post yapılacak işte doğru pozlanmış F‑Log2 + sabit/ölçülmüş WB + 10‑bit 4:2:2 ve doğru color management; hızlı teslimde ETERNA benzeri yumuşak bir simülasyon + highlight güvenliği + düşük/ölçülü NR ve sharpening’dir. Her reçete gövde, firmware, hareket, ışık, codec ve teslimat ekranıyla kısa bir kamera testi üzerinden doğrulanmalıdır.

Colour, tone and the optical chain

From analogue recording to the X-Trans sensor: colour science, cinema optics and in-camera processing. From white balance to F-Log2, what each of seven settings touches.

Yunus Türkyılmaz · 3 September 2026 · 24 min read

Summary

The “colour” in a Fujifilm video file is not a property of the sensor alone. The result is a system output shaped in sequence by the spectral content of the scene, the transmission of lens and filters, the sensor's colour filter array, exposure and analogue gain, digitisation, demosaicing, white balance, noise reduction, tone and gamut mapping, sharpening, resampling, chroma subsampling and codec compression. “Fujifilm colour” is therefore best understood not as a single colour matrix but as an end-to-end processing approach in which measurement and aesthetic interpretation meet.

The HS and HR sensors of the Fujifilm X-Trans CMOS 5 family approach the same creative goal with different engineering priorities. The X-H2S's 26.1 MP stacked, back-illuminated X-Trans CMOS 5 HS sensor prioritises fast readout, lower rolling shutter and high frame rates; the 40.2 MP back-illuminated X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor in the X-H2/X-T5 class prioritises detail and the potential for oversampling. Pixel count on its own is neither colour depth nor dynamic range. The practical equivalent of colour depth in the file is set by the bit depth and chroma sampling of the recording path; sensor performance is set by photon capacity, read noise, quantum efficiency, readout mode and exposure.

In in-camera film simulation recordings, settings such as Dynamic Range, Highlight/Shadow, Color, Sharpness and High ISO NR are largely baked into the image. On the F-Log/F-Log2 paths a wide-gamut, soft gamma curve is preserved for post-production; Fujifilm's manuals describe some film simulation tone settings as available outside the log path. White balance is an early, critical decision in balancing the sensor channels: even where a wrong white balance appears correctable later, it can amplify noise in the weak channel and raise the risk of channel clipping in saturated colours. 10-bit 4:2:2 or ProRes holds up better than 8-bit 4:2:0 under heavy tone and colour transformations; but no codec can bring back a highlight clipped at the sensor or shadow noise born of too few photons.

The main operational conclusion is this: choose the light and the exposure first, then the recording curve, and only last the “look” settings. For controlled delivery, 10-bit recording, a fixed/measured WB, highlight safety and measured noise reduction/sharpening; for fast delivery, an ETERNA-like low-contrast film simulation with cautious tone settings is the most reliable starting point.

Research question, method and limits

This study combines three questions:

For the Turkish synthesis the research surveyed primary and institutional sources in English, French, German and Japanese. Priority was given to Fujifilm manuals and technical sheets, CIE/ITU/ISO/EMVA standards, museum and library collections, and the technical documents of optics manufacturers. Manufacturer performance claims were not presented as independent laboratory measurements. Because Fujifilm's full processing order, sensor manufacturer, ADC architecture and proprietary demosaicing/NR algorithms are not public, the “sensor to codec” sequence below is an explanatory model combining verified menu behaviour with general imaging engineering — not a claim of reverse engineering.

This report does not catalogue every Fujifilm model/firmware combination. The main examples are given through the X-H2S (5 HS), X-H2 and X-T5 (5 HR); on older X-Trans generations, menu ranges, base ISO, F-Log options, bit depth and codecs may differ. Check the current manual for the relevant body before shooting.

A history of visual recording: from pigment to digital code

2.1 Pigment, surface and light

The first lasting visual records were not neutral copies of a scene; they were the combination of pigment, binder, surface, lighting and viewing conditions. UNESCO's record of the Cueva de las Manos documents substances such as iron oxide, kaolin, natrojarosite and manganese oxide in images dating to roughly 11,000–7,500 BCE (UNESCO). The white-marble appearance of ancient sculpture today does not represent the original experience either; the Getty's polychromy work shows through paint traces and scientific analysis that many works were coloured, while stating clearly that the reconstructions involve hypothesis (Getty Museum).

That historical fact offers a strong analogy for digital video: an RGB value is not “the colour of the object”. The object's spectral reflectance, the light source, the optical transfer, the sensor's spectral sensitivity, the colour transform and the display/surround determine the appearance together.

2.2 The transformation of photochemical recording

The daguerreotype, announced publicly in 1839, was a single, direct positive image developed with mercury vapour on silver-plated copper sensitised with iodine; having no negative, it was not a reproducible intermediate but a unique object whose appearance changed with viewing angle (Library of Congress). This shows that the notion of an “original” depends on the recording medium.

The Autochrome, commercial from 1907, was one of the first practical colour photographic processes. It combined an additive screen of dyed red, green and blue potato-starch grains with a silver-gelatin emulsion and relied on the eye's spatial integration of small colour elements (Metropolitan Museum; Institut Lumière — French). That idea returns today in different forms in the colour filter array and in chroma subsampling: full colour is not measured directly at every point; it is sampled and rebuilt with the help of neighbourhood and the visual system.

The French BnF chronology distinguishes the 1869 three-colour work of Cros and Ducos du Hauron, Lippmann's 1891 method, the Autochrome, and the multi-layer subtractive structure of 1935 Kodachrome (BnF — French). Japan's National Diet Library shows that some “colour photographs” of the Meiji/Taishō period were in fact hand-coloured black-and-white prints (NDL — Japanese). So throughout history three separate operations have frequently been merged under the heading “colour recording”: capturing scene colour, rebuilding it chemically or digitally, and adding aesthetic colour afterwards.

2.3 The inheritance carried from analogue film to digital profiles

In photochemical film, the base, the emulsion layers, the dye couplers, grain, exposure and processing shape the density–exposure curve and colour separation. A digital sensor starts closer to linear photon measurement, but the final image is not left linear: a gamma/log curve, colour matrix, gamut conversion, local/global tone operations and a film simulation are applied. Fujifilm's film simulations are therefore less physical copies of a specific film than colour and tone interpretations the company derived from its film history. Descriptions such as ETERNA's soft colour/rich shadow character appear in the manual with aesthetic output in mind (X-T5 manual).

Colour science and perception

3.1 Measured colour and seen colour

The CIE 1931 standard observer represents, through three colour-matching functions, the colour-matching behaviour of observers with normal colour vision under photopic conditions; the CIE 1964 observer is for larger visual fields (ISO/CIE 11664-1:2019). The CIE colorimetric framework treats standard illuminants, tristimulus values, chromaticity, colour difference and viewing conditions together (CIE 015:2018).

Perceived colour does not depend on the spectral stimulus alone; the size and shape of the field, the surround, adaptation and the observer's experience also matter (CIE International Lighting Vocabulary). CIECAM16 therefore offers a chromatic adaptation and appearance model that transforms XYZ values into perceptual quantities tied to the viewing condition (CIE 248:2022).

The practical consequence: a skin tone that looks neutral in camera may not look the same under a different display white or surround. “Correct colour” needs not just a camera setting but the spectrum of the light source, a reference target, a managed monitor, the delivery colour space and the viewing environment.

3.2 Metamerism and the limit of white balance

Different spectral distributions can produce the same tristimulus response; this is a metameric match. A camera sensor's RGB sensitivities are not identical to human cone sensitivities. Two fabrics can look the same in daylight and different under narrow-band LED; one camera may separate them differently from another. White balance neutralises a neutral surface, but it does not create spectral equivalence for every material.

That is why a single Kelvin value is not a solution under mixed light. Where necessary, light sources should be physically matched, a colour chart shot alongside the reference grey/white, and critical skin/product colours checked selectively in post.

The cinema lens: colour processing before light reaches the sensor

4.1 Geometric aperture, transmission and exposure

The f-number is a geometric quantity: focal length divided by entrance pupil diameter. The T-stop is a calibrated, transmission-based exposure value that also accounts for lens losses. Two lenses at the same f-number can produce different sensor exposures because of coating and glass losses. On cinema sets T-stops are preferred for exposure consistency between lenses. But the T value does not describe all of spectral colour; two lenses with the same total transmission may pass the blue or red regions differently.

4.2 MTF and “sharpness”

The modulation transfer function (MTF) shows how much of the contrast at different spatial frequencies is preserved from object to image; field position and the sagittal/tangential directions matter. A single MTF number is not “lens sharpness”. The ZEISS technical document explains how curves at 10/20/40 line pairs per millimetre describe detail and contrast behaviour, and how sagittal–tangential divergence relates to astigmatism and lateral colour (ZEISS MTF guide). MTF measured through a camera is also affected by the sensor colour array, demosaicing, the OLPF and sharpening. The final image is the system “lens MTF × sensor sampling × processing”.

Fujifilm's Sharpness setting therefore does not increase optical resolution. It makes detail more visible by raising local contrast at edges; overuse produces haloes, shimmering fine texture, and high-frequency energy that is expensive for the codec.

4.3 Chromatic aberration, coatings, flare and bokeh

In longitudinal chromatic aberration, wavelengths fall on different focal planes; coloured fringes can appear in the bokeh in front of and behind focus. Stopping down increases depth of field and reduces the effect, but the generalisation that “an old lens always has more colour aberration” is not correct (ZEISS technical article). Lateral chromatic aberration appears as a magnification difference between colour channels towards the frame edge and can be partly corrected in software.

Coatings change surface reflections, flare colour, black level and colour matching between lenses. Cooke's Panchro study explains that older single-layer coatings produce more internal reflection and lower contrast than modern multi-layer ones (Cooke). Fujinon's technical history documents the aim of the HT-EBC coating — low reflectance across a wide spectrum — as a balance between ghost/flare suppression and transmission (Fujinon technical history). These show why attributing the aesthetic result to “sensor colour” alone is a mistake.

4.4 The filter stack and its interaction with the sensor

ND/IRND and protective filters in front of the lens, and the cover glass in front of the sensor, add optical path to the beam. ARRI's FSND technical report shows that parallel glass can introduce spherical/chromatic aberration, coma, astigmatism and field curvature, particularly at wide angles and open apertures, and that multiple filters increase loss and reflection (ARRI FSND white paper).

The angle of incidence at the sensor corners, together with the microlenses and cover glass, affects colour shading/vignetting. Rather than declaring modern cinema lenses wholly “telecentric”, the match between exit pupil and chief-ray geometry and the sensor stack should be evaluated. An old lens's performance on film may not be repeated on a digital sensor's cover glass.

Fujifilm APS-C and the X-Trans sensor architecture

5.1 What APS-C determines, and what it does not

APS-C defines an approximate sensor surface size; on the Fujifilm X-H2S it is 23.5 × 15.6 mm (X-H2S specifications). At the same framing and f-number, larger or smaller formats lead to different system choices in depth of field and total light gathered; but sensor size alone is not a result for bit depth, colour gamut, codec, rolling shutter or dynamic range.

Pixel pitch and count are not “colour depth” on their own either. The 40.2 MP HR sensor can offer denser spatial sampling and the opportunity to oversample 4K from high-resolution video; the 26.1 MP stacked HS sensor has the advantage in fast scanning and high frame rates. The S/N result emerges between pixel and total sensor area, quantum efficiency, read noise, full-well capacity, exposure, temperature and processing.

5.2 The X-Trans colour filter array

Fujifilm's X-Trans array uses a low-periodicity 6×6 layout, unlike Bayer's short-repeat 2×2 structure. The manufacturer states that the presence of R-G-B elements in horizontal and vertical lines and the distribution of green reduce the risk of moiré/false colour and help remove the optical low-pass filter. The generations are summarised as: 2012 X-Trans, 2013 phase-detect II, 2016 copper-wired III, 2018 26.1 MP BSI IV, and 5 HS / 5 HR in 2022 (Fujifilm X-Trans CMOS technology).

This layout does not physically “eliminate” aliasing. Textures above the sensor's Nyquist limit can still cause problems; demosaicing quality depends on scene frequency and algorithm. Nor does the X-Trans layout directly explain the final colour appearance. The spectral transmission of the CFA filters, the calibration matrices, WB, gamut/tone processing, lens and light matter at least as much as the layout; Fujifilm does not publish the full spectral response or the demosaicing algorithm.

5.3 The fifth generation: HS and HR

PropertyX-Trans CMOS 5 HS / X-H2SX-Trans CMOS 5 HR / X-H2, X-T5 class

Risk/trade-offLower stills pixel count; crop/heat/data depending on modePotentially slower scan; high data/heat; rolling shutter mode-dependent

Fujifilm reports that the X-H2S sensor is read roughly four times faster than the previous generation and that the X-Processor 5 offers about twice the processing speed (Fujifilm announcement, 31 May 2022). The X-H2's 40.2 MP BSI HR sensor and 8K/30p 4:2:2 10-bit recording are documented in the manufacturer's announcement (Fujifilm X-H2 announcement).

Marketing dynamic-range figures should not be compared without the measurement conditions. Where Fujifilm states “14+ stops” for F-Log2 on the X-H2S, CineD measured 12.2 stops at an SNR=2 threshold, 13.6 stops at SNR=1, and 9.7 ms of rolling shutter at 4K25 ProRes HQ / F-Log2 / ISO 1250 (CineD lab test). The apparent contradiction is essentially a difference of threshold and method: the lowest “detected” signal and a “clean, usable” shadow are not the same number.

The image processing chain from sensor to codec

6.1 An explanatory block model

Scene spectrum and illumination → lens/filter transmission and flare → microlens/CFA/photodiode → exposure and analogue gain → readout + ADC → calibration/defect correction → demosaicing → WB and colour transform → log/gamut or film simulation/tone → noise reduction and sharpening → resizing → Y′CbCr/chroma subsampling → bit depth and signal level → codec/container.

The exact order of NR, sharpening and some colour operations can be manufacturer-specific, multi-stage and content-adaptive. The order here is a teaching model. The most important distinction is this:

6.2 Photons, noise and dynamic range

The statistical fluctuation of photon arrival produces shot noise; as signal increases, absolute noise rises but SNR improves by roughly a square-root relationship. Underexposing shadows and lifting them in post amplifies noise, because it enlarges channels that gathered few photons to begin with. The EMVA 1288 standard defines dynamic range as the ratio of the saturation signal to the absolute sensitivity threshold, and SNR through the signal/noise relationship (EMVA 1288 Release 4.0). A consumer camera manufacturer's “stops” claim is not directly comparable unless given under the same standard.

The ISO setting does not increase the sensor's photon capacity. Depending on implementation it changes analogue/digital gain, exposure index and tone placement. ISO 12232 defines ISO speeds, standard output sensitivity and exposure index reporting for digital cameras (ISO 12232:2019). The raised minimum ISO of Fujifilm's DR200/400 and F-Log2 should therefore not be read as “the sensor suddenly became more sensitive/dynamic”; it is an operating condition that redistributes highlight headroom within the encoding/exposure strategy.

6.3 Demosaicing, resolution and aliasing

A CFA sensor does not measure a full RGB triplet at every photosite. Demosaicing estimates the missing channels from neighbouring samples. On repeating patterns such as fine fabric, grilles, roofs and LED walls, moiré or false colour can appear where scene detail exceeds sensor sampling. Quality 4K oversampled from 6.2K/8K can reduce aliasing and noise with appropriate filtering; line skipping/pixel binning or high-speed crop modes give different results. The same sensor's 24/25p HQ, 4K60 and 4K120 modes should therefore not be assumed equivalent in colour/detail.

Fujifilm video profiles and codecs

7.1 Film simulation, F-Log, F-Log2, F-Log2 C and HLG

A film simulation builds a near-viewable look inside the camera. ETERNA, with its low saturation and soft tone, can be a relatively flexible starting point for grading; it is still not log/raw. Highlight, Shadow, Color, Sharpness and NR changes are applied to the image before compression and cannot be fully undone.

F-Log and F-Log2 use a soft gamma and wide gamut for post-production. The current X-H2S manual lists F-Log at ISO 640–12800 and F-Log2/F-Log2 C at ISO 1250–12800; these ranges vary by model and firmware (X-H2S Movie Setting). In the F-Log data sheet, 18% grey sits at a 10-bit code value of 470 / about 46% IRE; in F-Log2 at 400 / 38% IRE. 90% reflectance is 705 / 73% IRE in F-Log and 570 / 58% IRE in F-Log2 (F-Log v1.2, F-Log2 v1.1). This lower mid/high-tone placement leaves code room for the upper stops; a log image looking flat on screen is normal.

F-Log2 C uses the same gamma/code values as F-Log2; the difference is the wider F-Gamut C primaries. F-Log2 C is therefore not “another gamma that encodes more stops” but an option carrying wider colour coordinates (F-Log2 C v1.0). Without a correct IDT/LUT/colour management, a wide gamut is not an advantage but a risk of wrong colour conversion.

HLG is the delivery/viewing path conforming to the ITU-R BT.2100 HDR standard. BT.2100 defines PQ and HLG for HDR production/exchange; HLG aims at a degree of compatibility with legacy transfer curves (ITU-R BT.2100). Choosing HLG is not merely recording a wider dynamic range; it is an end-to-end decision requiring BT.2020 primaries, correct tagging, an HDR monitor and delivery management.

7.2 Bit depth, chroma sampling and compression

8-bit offers 256 code levels per channel, 10-bit 1024. These numbers are not directly “the number of visible colours” or the precision of the sensor ADC; they are used by gamma, gamut, the Y′CbCr transform, legal/full range and chroma sampling. 10-bit carries the wide range of a log image, and the curve/saturation changes of post, in smaller quantisation steps; it lowers the risk of banding in sky/wall gradients.

At 4:2:2 chroma is sampled at half the luma resolution horizontally and full vertically; at 4:2:0 at half in both directions. The ITU definition gives SubWidthC=2/SubHeightC=2 for 4:2:0 and 2/1 for 4:2:2 (ITU-T H.274 table 2). For fine colour boundaries, keying/green screen and heavy colour correction, 4:2:2 is more robust.

The X-H2S offers ProRes 422 HQ/422/LT, H.265/HEVC and H.264/AVC. The official table lists 10-bit options on the ProRes and H.265 paths and 8-bit on H.264, with 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 variants in H.265 (X-H2S specifications). The Apple ProRes 422 family is full-frame, 10-bit, 4:2:2 and intraframe, oriented towards editing (Apple ProRes White Paper). Long-GOP can give more efficient file sizes; ProRes/All-Intra is more predictable for editing, moving fine textures and re-encoding across generations, but with larger files.

The critical boundary: a codec only preserves the processed samples it is given. A burnt channel, texture erased by excessive temporal NR, sharpening haloes, or a channel weakened by wrong WB do not come back with 10-bit ProRes.

7.3 Full range and video range

The X-H2S manual defines VIDEO RANGE as 16–235 for 8-bit and 64–940 for 10-bit, and FULL RANGE as 0–255 and 0–1023 respectively (X-H2S Movie Setting). An NLE misinterpreting the file can lift or crush blacks or show whites as flat/clipped. That error is not sensor dynamic range; it is a level-mapping problem. Verify with a test clip, a waveform and correct metadata interpretation.

Seven core settings, from sensor to codec

8.1 White balance

What it does. Sets the relative gains of the RGB channels and the subsequent colour transform according to the scene illumination. Fujifilm offers Auto, White Priority/Ambience Priority variants, three custom measurements, presets, 2500–10000 K and a two-axis WB Shift (X-H2S Image Quality). Kelvin only approximates the blue–amber axis; a green–magenta deviation needs tint/WB Shift.

Where in the chain. In the early processing layer around demosaicing/colour transform. Internal F-Log is not “raw”: Fujifilm explains that ISO and WB are processed into the recording (Fujifilm Learning Centre). On HDMI raw output, in-camera development is not applied; WB can be part of the raw interpretation in post.

Image result. A very warm/cool WB can be globally converted in post; but if one of the sensor channels has saturated, the information does not come back. Lifting a weak channel heavily raises colour noise. Under mixed LED/tungsten/daylight, a single WB cannot correct every object; metamerism remains.

Recommendation. On a controlled set, measure a custom WB with a grey card; hold the card under the key light and at the subject plane. Lock Kelvin+tint between shots. In non-raw log shooting, avoid the “I'll fix it entirely in post” approach. Creative warmth can be added in the look layer after technical neutralisation.

8.2 Dynamic Range: DR100/DR200/DR400

What it does. On the film simulation/processed video path, changes the exposure index and tone mapping to reduce highlight loss. In the X-T5 video manual there is no AUTO; DR200 requires at least ISO 250, DR400 at least ISO 500, and they are available only when the “P” — processed film simulation — path is selected (X-T5 Movie Image Quality). The X-H2S thresholds differ, at ISO 320/640. Recipes should therefore not be copied between bodies.

What it does not do. It does not increase the photodiode's full-well capacity and does not rescue a burnt sensor channel. The higher minimum ISO is part of a different tone/exposure placement that preserves highlight headroom. Consequently, noise can become more visible when mids/shadows are lifted.

Recommendation. With a film simulation in high contrast, test DR200/400 with a highlight measurement. In F-Log/F-Log2, use the log curve and appropriate exposure tools instead of the DR menu. Do not add “DR400 + F-Log2” together as two separate dynamic-range increases.

8.3 Highlight / tone curve highlights

What it does. By Fujifilm's definition, high values make bright tones harder, low values softer; the X-H2S range is −2…+4 (X-H2S Image Quality). It does not change the sensor saturation point; it compresses/expands existing highlight data in the output curve.

Risk. Negative values give a softer roll-off and a sense of preserved texture, but can compress the tonal range in the codec into a narrower region. Positive values raise brightness and contrast while pushing face/wedding-dress/cloud texture towards white earlier. If a channel has clipped at the sensor, Highlight −2 does not bring it back.

Recommendation. For fast Rec.709 delivery, ETERNA + Highlight −1/−2 can be a safe start; the exact value should be chosen per scene and body with a chart/real-skin test. In log recording, do tone mapping after colour management instead of this setting.

8.4 Shadow / tone curve shadows

What it does. A high value hardens the shadows and pushes them towards black; a low value softens/opens them. This is the black floor and low-mid tone mapping; it does not reduce the sensor's read noise.

Risk. A positive Shadow value can visually hide noise but irreversibly crush shadow separation. A negative value makes detail visible but also reveals photon starvation and chroma noise; at 8-bit/Long-GOP, blocking/banding can become apparent.

Recommendation. Do not use strongly positive Shadow in camera for the sake of “clean black”. For controlled post, a low-contrast but correctly exposed recording is safer; place the shadows in post together with the noise and the delivery monitor.

8.5 Color

What it does. Changes the colour density/saturation of the film simulation in the range −4…+4. It does not change the CFA's spectral sensitivity or the primaries of the recording gamut. Saturating moves RGB/Y′CbCr values towards the gamut boundary.

Risk. At + values, strong channels — particularly red lights, flowers and skin — can clip; at 4:2:0 and low bitrate, colour edges can break. A − value does not provide reversible “raw flexibility”; a low-saturation sample is encoded after the in-camera colour transform.

Recommendation. If heavy grading is expected, keep Color neutral or slightly low in the film simulation; on the log path, use the correct gamut conversion. Check saturation with the waveform/vectorscope, and skin tone with a visual reference rather than mechanically pinning it to the “skin-tone line”.

8.6 Sharpness

What it does. Raises/lowers the local contrast of edges; −4…+4 on the X-H2S. It produces no new optical information. It can create haloes/ringing on detail coming from demosaicing and scaling.

Codec effect. Sharpening increases high-frequency energy. Areas such as hair, leaves, fabric and grain give the codec a harder target; low bitrate/Long-GOP can produce blocking, mosquito noise and shimmer. Controlled sharpening added afterwards is reversible; an in-camera halo is not fully reversible.

Recommendation. For editing/grading, −4…−2 is a common starting range, not a universal truth. Test at the final resolution and screen size. Covering lens “softness” with high Sharpness raises micro-contrast but does not correct focus error or optical resolution.

8.7 High ISO NR and Interframe NR

What it does. High ISO NR reduces more noise and softens contours at high values; a low value leaves detail/contour. Interframe NR uses similarity between frames; Fujifilm warns that ghosting can occur with moving subjects or camera movement (X-T5 Movie Image Quality).

Trade-off. NR can erase fine skin texture, hair and fabric along with the noise. If sharpening is applied afterwards, a “wax skin + artificial edge” look results. Temporal NR is strong in static low light; it can leave trails in fast pans, hands, hair, water and smoke. From the codec's point of view, NR eases compression by reducing complex random texture — but erased detail does not return.

Recommendation. For controlled post, start High ISO NR low (e.g. −4…−2) and Interframe NR Off in moving scenes; for clean, static low-light delivery, evaluate Auto with a real motion test. Choose NR not by the ISO number alone but by exposure, motion, temperature, codec and target screen.

Misconceptions and corrections

“X-Trans automatically gives better colour.” X-Trans is a sampling/aliasing strategy. Final colour is the joint product of the CFA spectrum, matrix, WB, profile, optics and the viewing chain.

“DR400 adds two stops to the sensor.” The DR mode does not change full-well capacity; it changes the highlight headroom and tone placement in the processed image. The measured/usable result depends on the noise threshold.

“A 10-bit file carries the 14-bit sensor raw.” File bit depth and sensor/ADC read precision are different layers. Internal 10-bit video carries 10-bit samples of a processed signal.

“F-Log2 C is more dynamic range.” F-Log2 C and F-Log2 use the same gamma/code placement; the C version's difference is the wider F-Gamut C.

“WB is metadata in log.” Fujifilm's internal F-Log video is not raw; WB and ISO are processed into the recorded look. HDMI raw is a separate path.

“Sharpness creates detail, NR only removes noise.” Sharpness creates edge contrast; NR cannot separate signal from noise perfectly. Both can create artefacts and irreversible loss.

Conclusion

The history of colour shows that no recording medium merely “stores the truth”. Pigment becomes visible through surface and light; the Autochrome's colour mosaic through the eye's integration; film through chemistry and the density curve; the digital camera through optics, sensor, processing and codec. Fujifilm's distinctive contribution is combining the X-Trans sampling approach with a long tradition of film/colour engineering in processed profiles. But a sensor label on its own is not the explanation of the resulting colour.

In video, the decision hierarchy is clear: (1) light/lens/filter, (2) exposure and WB, (3) sensor readout mode, (4) gamma/gamut, (5) in-camera tone–colour–NR–sharpness, (6) bit depth/chroma/codec, (7) post and viewing condition. Data lost at an early stage cannot be created at a later one. Strong processing at a late stage can hide the error but reduces flexibility.

In the Fujifilm context the most robust general strategy is, for work going to post, correctly exposed F-Log2 + fixed/measured WB + 10-bit 4:2:2 and correct colour management; for fast delivery, a soft ETERNA-like simulation + highlight safety + low/measured NR and sharpening. Every recipe should be verified through a short camera test with the body, firmware, motion, light, codec and delivery screen.
