F-Log2'nin F-Log'a getirdiği 3 durağın tamamı parlak alandadır.

Aşağıdaki değerler, her uzayın resmî birincillerinden hesaplandı ve BT.709'a oranlandı.

ÖZGÜN TÜRETME · F-LOG2 İLE F-LOG2 C ARASINDAKİ TEK FARK

Fujifilm'in F-Log2 C teknik dokümanı, eğrinin sabitlerini harfi harfine F-Log2 ile aynı veriyor: a = 5.555556, b = 0.064829, c = 0.245281, d = 0.384316; %18 gri yine 400, %90 beyaz yine 570.

Üçgenlerin köşeleri her uzayın birincil renkleridir. DaVinci Wide Gamut ve ACES AP0'ın köşelerinin eğrinin dışında kaldığına dikkat: bunlar görünür renkler değildir.

Hayalî birincil renkler neden var

DaVinci Wide Gamut'un yeşil birincili y = 0,9877, mavi birincili y = −0,1155'tir.

DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate'in resmî tanımı

LUT (Look-Up Table) bir tablodur: giriş renk değerlerini önceden hesaplanmış çıkış değerlerine eşler.

Sıranın arkasındaki tek ilkeyi şöyle özetlemek mümkün: her işlem, önceki işlemin kusurunu büyütmeyeceği yere konur.

Vaka: Matrix'in yeşili

Fujifilm'in beyaz dengesi kaydırma ızgarası iki eksenlidir: Kırmızı ↔ Camgöbeği ve Mavi ↔ Sarı.

yeşil = camgöbeği + sarı = (−Kırmızı) + (−Mavi)

DOZKAYDIRMA
hafif yeşil−2 K / −2 M
belirgin−4 K / −4 M

The Record of Light

From pigment to photon, from photon to code: the history of visual recording, the measurable side of colour, and where the video settings on a Fujifilm body sit in that chain.

Yunus Türkyılmaz · 25 August 2026 · 31 min read

The problem of recording colour

The history of visual recording is, for a long stretch, a history without colour. When photography learned to capture light in the 1820s, what it captured was only brightness; the recording of colour came forty years later, and it rests on an idea that came not from photography but from physics.

Three filters: 1861

In 1861 James Clerk Maxwell staged a demonstration to show that every colour can be produced by mixing red, green and blue light in the right proportions. He photographed a tartan ribbon three times on black-and-white plates, through red, green and blue filters; then he fitted three separate projection lanterns with filters of the same colours and superimposed the three images on one screen. A recognisable colour image appeared. This is additive colour synthesis, and it is the same principle your screen works on today. Maxwell's method turned colour recording into a measurement problem: measure the scene in three bands, and you can rebuild the colour from the three measurements. The colour filter array on a sensor and the layers of a film emulsion both do exactly this today. The whole difference between them is how you manage to take the three measurements at the same time, on the same surface.

The French physicist Louis Ducos du Hauron soon proposed the reverse: instead of adding lights, subtracting dyes. Printing with coloured pigments from three black-and-white negatives shot through red, green and blue filters — that is, subtractive colour. All of today's colour film and print technology descends from that branch.

Starch grains: Autochrome, 1903

Autochrome, patented by the Lumière brothers in 1903 and brought to market in 1907, was the first commercial solution for taking the three measurements on a single plate: grains of potato starch dyed red, green and blue were scattered at random over a glass plate, and the black-and-white emulsion beneath was exposed through this mosaic. An additive mosaic-screen method, in other words. It remained the principal method of colour photography until subtractive films arrived in the mid-1930s.

CONTINUITY

Autochrome's randomly scattered coloured grains and the colour filter array in front of a sensor solve the same problem: each point can measure only one band, and the two missing bands are estimated from the neighbours. In Autochrome the eye and viewing distance do that; in digital, the demosaicing algorithm does. The argument between X-Trans's 6×6 pattern and Bayer's 2×2 is the continuation of an argument that began in 1903.

Three layers, one base: Kodachrome, 1935

Kodachrome is the first commercial integral tri-pack process, in which three colour-sensitive emulsion layers are coated on the same base. On top of the film base sit three thin emulsions: the blue-sensitive layer uppermost, a yellow filter layer just beneath it, then the green- and red-sensitive layers. What sets Kodachrome apart is that the colour dyes are not in the film. All three layers are black-and-white; the colour is formed during processing, by colour couplers added to the developers. That is why a long, multi-step process called K-14 was required. The consequence of this design was that the film's character was determined largely in the lab — recording and interpretation were separated.

This separation is the backbone of the rest of this study. On a Fujifilm body, the relationship between the raw file and the film simulation is the direct descendant of the relationship between an exposed Kodachrome film and the K-14 bath: the measurement is made once, and the interpretation is applied afterwards, in a form that can be changed.

WHAT THIS SECTION LEAVES OUT

The history of pigments and the colour vocabulary of the Ottoman and Renaissance painting traditions — terms such as çivid, lâciverd, zırnık and jengâr and their counterparts in Cennino Cennini, biacca, cinabrese, azzurro della Magna — were not covered in this version. Nefeszâde İbrahim's Gülzâr-ı Savâb and the Libro di pittura compiled by Melzi should be surveyed as primary texts; the TDV İslam Ansiklopedisi and the Vatican's Urb. lat. 1270 manuscript are accessible starting points.

The measurable side of colour

Colour is not a property of light. A property of light is its spectral power distribution — how much energy there is at each wavelength. Colour is the response that distribution produces in the human visual system. The distinction sounds philosophical, but it is entirely practical: every obstacle to forcing a camera to produce correct colour originates here.

Infinite dimensions reduced to three numbers

The visible spectrum is a continuous function — infinite-dimensional, in other words. The three cone types in the eye reduce that function to three numbers. The unavoidable consequence is metamerism: two physically quite different spectral distributions can produce the same colour in the eye, because the three cone responses come out the same.

Metamerism is not a flaw; it is the mathematical necessity of reducing to three channels. But it creates a problem: if the camera's three channels have spectral sensitivities different from the eye's three cones, the camera can record as different two objects the eye sees as equal, and the eye can see as different two objects the camera records as equal.

The Luther–Ives condition

The condition a camera must satisfy to count as colorimetrically correct is well defined: the sensor's spectral sensitivity curves must be expressible as a linear transformation of the colour-matching functions of the CIE 1931 2° observer. This is called the Maxwell–Ives criterion, or the Luther condition.

WHY NO CAMERA IS “CORRECT”

Real colour filters are made from dyes and interference layers; the curves that can be manufactured cannot be an exact linear transformation of the human cone curves. So no commercial camera satisfies the Luther condition fully — they all approximate it. The 3×3 transformation called the colour matrix is the compromise that minimises the error of that approximation for a given illuminant and a given set of colours.

The conclusion that follows matters for understanding Fujifilm's film simulation approach: since no camera can be colorimetrically correct, “reproducing as measured” is an unreachable target to begin with. What remains is the choice of which compromise to make. Fujifilm describes that choice explicitly as an aesthetic decision: they say that reproducing colours exactly as measured is not the right approach in cinema.

What white balance actually is

The human visual system sees a white sheet of paper as white across a wide range of illuminant colours. This ability is called colour constancy, and the adaptation mechanism in the eye is chromatic adaptation. Its counterpart in the camera is white balance. The classic model is the von Kries transform: a separate gain is applied to each cone type's response so that the appearance of the reference white stays constant. Because Herbert E. Ives was the first to apply the method explicitly to colour constancy, it is also called von Kries–Ives adaptation. Its implementation in the camera is direct: separate gains are applied to the R, G and B channels so that a neutral surface comes out R=G=B.

The point that matters in practice is this: white balance creates no loss in the raw data; it applies an interpretation. In the raw file the three channel gains have not yet been applied, which is why white balance can be changed after the fact, at no cost, in a raw shoot. On the video side the situation is different — the gains are applied at recording time and baked into an 8- or 10-bit signal, and from that point on undoing them is not lossless. Part of the value of log recording comes from here.

The colour of the lens

A lens is not a neutral pipe carrying light to the sensor. Every glass surface, every coating and every air-to-glass transition is spectrally selective; the colour distribution of the light leaving a lens is different from that of the light entering it. The measurable part of what is called “lens character” is largely this.

f-stop versus T-stop

The f-stop is a geometric ratio: focal length divided by the diameter of the entrance pupil. It takes no account of how much light is lost inside the lens. The T in T-stop stands for transmission, and it measures the light the lens actually passes. Every cinema lens is tested individually and its T value is marked for that specific lens; exposure consistency between different lenses can be guaranteed only that way. This has a direct counterpart in stills: two lenses both set to f/1.4 can send different amounts of light to the sensor. When exposure does not match between two bodies on a shoot, this is one of the reasons.

The spectral selectivity of coatings

Anti-reflection coatings do not work equally at all wavelengths. The patent literature describes coatings designed to pass light in the red region at a higher rate, with the reflection minimum typically placed around 610 nanometres. The coating, in other words, is a design parameter that determines the lens's colour transmission — part of what a manufacturer calls “colour character” is decided here, not in the glass itself but in the layers a few hundred nanometres thick on top of it.

Similarly, near-infrared cut coatings and colour filters are used to improve colour reproduction by controlling transmission across the 400–700 nm visible range.

WHAT THIS SECTION LEAVES OUT

This section currently rests on patent abstracts and secondary sources. What it needs to be made solid: measured spectral transmission curves of cinema lenses (the data published by manufacturers is limited), the difference in colour transmission between anamorphic and spherical designs, and a measurable definition of micro-contrast — its relationship to the low-frequency region of the MTF curve. Fujinon's own technical documentation for its cinema lenses is also more detailed on the Japanese side; that survey was not done.

Sensor architecture: the real difference between X-Trans and Bayer

The Bayer array is a 2×2 pattern: two green, one red, one blue. X-Trans uses a 6×6 pattern with a ratio of 5 green, 2 red and 2 blue within it.

COLOUR FILTER ARRAY COMPARISON

FEATUREBAYERX-TRANS
Pattern size2×26×6
Green pixel ratio50%55%
R, G and B in every row/columnNoYes
Low-pass filterUsually requiredNot required
Demosaicing loadbaseline≈ 25% more

In the Bayer array some horizontal and vertical lines contain no red or blue pixel at all; this can produce false colour. In X-Trans, at least one R, G and B falls on every horizontal and vertical line within every six pixels — Fujifilm's colour-reproduction claim rests on this. The higher proportion of green pixels means slightly wider dynamic range in the shadows and slightly better behaviour at high ISO.

There is a price. The demosaicing load is roughly a quarter heavier than Bayer's; this may be one reason Fujifilm uses Bayer rather than X-Trans in its medium-format bodies, though the company has not given its reasons. Moreover, the quality of X-Trans demosaicing in raw-processing software varies noticeably from brand to brand — which makes the choice of software a real decision in a raw workflow.

A MEASURED ASSESSMENT

Independent comparisons show that X-Trans visibly reduces chroma noise, but that luminance noise stays almost the same. The theoretical resolution advantage of not needing a low-pass filter is not pronounced in practice. Because the patterns differ, Bayer gives the cleaner result on some subject textures and X-Trans on others — there is no absolute superiority.

The physical ceiling of colour depth and dynamic range in APS-C

“Colour depth” is confusing because it names two separate things. The bit depth of the file (such as 14-bit raw) is a measure of the container. The number of colours the sensor can distinguish is a measured performance, and it is limited by noise. DxOMark's “colour sensitivity” metric reports the latter in bits: the number of colour nuances the sensor can tell apart.

The definition of dynamic range is directly physical: DR = log₂( full-well capacity / noise floor )

full-well capacity — the number of photons a pixel can collect before it saturates; noise floor — the level at which an incoming photon can no longer be reliably distinguished. Noise has two components. Shot noise comes from the statistical distribution of photons and has nothing to do with the sensor — it is the nature of light itself, and it grows with the square root of the photon count. Read noise belongs to the electronics, is measured in a dark frame, and is most visible at low exposure, that is, in the shadows.

THE CONCLUSION FOR APS-C

Full-well capacity is limited by pixel volume, which is to say directly by surface area. The difference between APS-C and full frame comes not from colour science or the processor but from a roughly 2.3× difference in area. At the same generation of technology, APS-C collects about one stop less light than full frame; there is no way to close that gap, it can only be hidden by noise reduction.

For reference, the measured APS-C upper limit gives an idea: the Nikon D7200 sensor sits at the measured peak of the APS-C class with 24.5 bits of colour depth and 14.6 EV of landscape dynamic range. That is a realistic upper value for the format's physical ceiling.

Where the settings touch each other

The four sections so far were the groundwork for this one. The image-quality settings on a body are not independent boxes; they touch different points of the same pipeline and change each other's results.

DR modes: really an exposure decision

Despite the name, DR200 and DR400 are not a “dynamic range expansion” trick.

The mechanism is plain: the camera deliberately underexposes, then lifts only the lower tones in JPEG processing.

HOW THE DR MODES WORK

MODEUNDEREXPOSURELOWEST ISODONE IN PROCESSING
DR100—baseStandard
DR2001 stop2× baseShadows and midtones lifted back
DR4002 stops4× baseShadows and midtones lifted back

The critical detail is where the ISO requirement comes from. Normally, when a high ISO is selected, the camera amplifies the sensor signal. With the DR function on, that amplification is skipped: one or two stops of brightening are moved to the processor instead of being applied to the sensor as analogue or digital gain. That is why there is no loss from the sensor's dynamic range. It is also why the threshold depends on the body: on bodies with base ISO 160 (X-H2S, X-T4, X-S20) DR200 needs ISO 320 and DR400 needs 640; on base-125 bodies (X-T5, X-H2, X100VI) 250 and 500. The often-quoted 400/800 comes from older bodies with base ISO 200.

THE EFFECT ON THE RAW FILE

The underexposure really happens, but not through shutter speed or aperture: at the same ISO, DR200 and DR400 use the same shutter speed and aperture as DR100. What changes is the gain at which the sensor signal is read — one or two stops less gain leaves that much more room for the highlights. In a raw shoot, DR400 means two extra stops of highlight headroom paid for by lifting the shadows two stops in processing, and that lift raises shadow noise too. The real price is in ISO: DR400 is only available from four times the base ISO, so it is not free in dark scenes.

F-Log versus F-Log2: the whole difference is in the highlights

The two technical documents Fujifilm has published give the transfer formula and constants of both curves in full. That makes it possible to calculate the difference directly, without relying on marketing phrases (“12 stops”, “13+ stops”).

The transfer curves were computed from the official constants. As in Fujifilm's own graph, the horizontal axis shows stops from 18% grey and the vertical axis the 10-bit code value. F-Log2's curve is flatter: it fits a wider scene range into the same code range. The difference between the two curves' 18% grey points (470 and 400) is the difference in the code allowance reserved for the highlights.

ORIGINAL DERIVATION

All 3 stops that F-Log2 adds to F-Log are in the highlights. The shadow side — the range encoded below 18% grey — is identical in the two curves: 7.66 stops. Fujifilm does not state this in any document in this form; it can be computed from the constants in the two files.

The practical meaning: switching from F-Log to F-Log2 does not improve your shadow noise.

The gain happens only in the highlights, and only if the scene contains that much brightness. In a scene heavy in shadow and tight in highlights, F-Log2 gives less code resolution than F-Log, because it pushes the midtones down to lower code values.

There is a critical distinction here: these 13 and 16 stops are the range the curve can encode, not the range the sensor produces. If the sensor delivers 14 stops, a 16-stop curve samples those 14 stops more sparsely. Using F-Log2 in a scene the sensor cannot handle does not rescue information that does not exist — it only spreads the information that does exist over fewer code values.

COLOUR SPACE

The gamut of both curves is F-Gamut, and its primaries are identical to ITU-R BT.2020: R (0.708 / 0.292), G (0.170 / 0.797), B (0.131 / 0.046), white D65 (0.3127 / 0.3290). Fujifilm's own FAQ answers directly why a wider gamut was not chosen: to avoid the tonal jumps that tend to appear when going from a wide gamut to a narrow one. F-Log is also recorded full range, to use the bit width of the signal efficiently.

Sharpness, noise and the question of order

Sharpening and noise reduction touch the same information from opposite directions. Sharpening boosts high spatial frequencies; noise is also high-frequency, so sharpening boosts noise as well. Noise reduction suppresses high frequencies; fine texture is also high-frequency, so noise reduction suppresses detail as well. When both are turned on at once, the result is that each partly undoes the other, and in between appear the textureless surfaces called “plastic”.

On the video side this matters even more, because compression comes next. To the encoder, noise is an incompressible signal that eats the bit budget; a noisy image produces more block artefacts at the same bit rate. That is why the “right” noise-reduction setting for video can differ from the one for stills: in stills, noise can be tolerated for the sake of detail; in video, noise degrades compression and thereby indirectly takes detail away too.

Applied analysis: a video recipe

A concrete example shows how the settings stack better than abstract description. The recipe below is a real video recipe.

ANALYSIS

Three settings push in the same direction, and all three increase shadow noise: DR400 puts two stops less light on the sensor, shadow tone −1.5 lifts that dark region further, and with noise reduction at −4 — almost off — the noise that emerges is not suppressed. All three are a deliberate choice: highlights safe, texture preserved, and in return a film-grain-like noise accepted in the shadows.

This is not a bad recipe — it is a consistent one. But its limit needs to be known: it works very well in a high-contrast daylight scene (like the cityscape in the example), because the shadows already receive enough light. Used indoors in low light, the same recipe stacks the three effects and produces unusable noise. The ISO ceiling having been set at 6400 confirms this: the recipe was written for conditions where light is plentiful.

In video there is one more price: as described above, noise is an incompressible signal to the encoder. Keeping noise reduction at −4 means more block artefacts at the same bit rate. A choice that costs nothing in stills can, in video, indirectly take away detail as well.

WHAT FOLLOWS

Exactly where these settings fall in the pipeline — and which of them are reversible in the raw file — is covered in section 9.

Colour space and gamut

A colour space is fully defined by three things. Without separating which of them does what, no discussion of colour management is possible, because most mistakes in practice come from confusing the three.

1. Primaries — the coordinates of red, green and blue on the CIE xy plane. These are the corners of the triangle and set the limit of the colours that can be produced.

2. White point — where neutral is. D65 (0.3127 / 0.3290) is the broadcast standard; DCI white (0.3140 / 0.3510) is the cinema-theatre standard.

3. Transfer function — how code values correspond to amounts of light. It has nothing to do with gamut; it says how brightness is distributed over the code range.

Gamut concerns only the first item. The gamut of F-Log and F-Log2 is the same — both use F-Gamut; the entire difference between them is in the third item, the transfer function. That is why the 3-stop difference in section 5 is not a gamut difference.

Measured gamut areas

Once the primary coordinates are known, the area of the gamut triangle on the CIE xy plane can be computed directly. The values below were computed from each space's official primaries and expressed relative to BT.709.

ORIGINAL DERIVATION · THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN F-LOG2 AND F-LOG2 C

Fujifilm's F-Log2 C technical document gives the curve's constants letter for letter the same as F-Log2: a = 5.555556, b = 0.064829, c = 0.245281, d = 0.384316; 18% grey again 400, 90% white again 570. So F-Log2 C adds not a single stop of dynamic range to F-Log2. The tone curves of the two look as if they came out of the same file.

The difference is in the gamut alone. F-Gamut C's primaries are R (0.7347 / 0.2653), G (0.0263 / 0.9737), B (0.1173 / −0.0224) — when I compute it, its area comes out 1.51 times F-Gamut's, that is, 51% wider. Its red primary sits at exactly the same point as ACES AP0's red; its blue, with a negative y, spills into the imaginary region.

The practical meaning: switching to F-Log2 C gains you no shadows or highlights; it only carries very saturated colours (neon signs, stage lights, saturated fabrics) without clipping. If you have a dynamic-range problem, F-Log2 C is not the solution.

On the CIE 1931 xy diagram these gamuts are drawn as triangles: BT.709, DCI-P3, F-Gamut, F-Gamut C and DaVinci Wide Gamut, with the D65 white point marked.

The horseshoe-shaped curve is the locus of pure spectral colours — every colour a human can see lies inside it. The corners of the triangles are each space's primaries. Note that the corners of DaVinci Wide Gamut and ACES AP0 fall outside the curve: those are not visible colours.

Why imaginary primaries exist

DaVinci Wide Gamut's green primary has y = 0.9877, and its blue primary y = −0.1155. These lie outside the spectral locus — they are colours that do not physically exist. No display can show them, no camera can record them.

WHY DELIBERATELY IMAGINARY

A working space must be wide enough to contain every source that will enter it.

If a colour recorded by a camera falls outside the working space's triangle, at least one of that colour's RGB components comes out negative after the transform. Negative values produce breakage in compositing and tone mapping.

Blackmagic says so plainly: DWG covers colours outside the visible spectrum by design, to keep data coming from other wide-gamut spaces from going negative during conversion. So the imaginary primary is not showing off; it is a mathematical price paid to avoid producing negative values.

Gamut compression

What to do with colours that do not fit when going from a wide space down to a narrow one (such as BT.2020 → BT.709) is a separate problem. On the ACES side there is a separate specification for it — Reference Gamut Compression. In the ACES workflow, breakage has been found to appear at two points: in the step from camera raw RGB to AP0 via the IDT, and in the step from AP0 to AP1 (ACEScg, ACEScct). The values gamut compression deals with are strongly negative in at least one component in AP1; ACEScct's range does not reach low enough to cover them. ACES 2.0 replaced the old RRT + ODT pair with a single unified transform and moved to volumetric gamut mapping. The conceptual advance here is this: doing gamut compression not only on the xy plane but in three dimensions, taking luminance into account.

The reason given in Fujifilm's F-Log FAQ for not choosing a wider gamut is the other end of the same problem: going from a wide gamut to a narrow one tends to produce tonal jumps. Enlarging the gamut, in other words, is not free — fitting a wider colour range into the same bit depth enlarges the step between code values.

Correction and grading

Both are loosely referred to as “colour work”, but technically they are separate jobs, and their order never changes.

THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE TWO STAGES

COLOUR CORRECTIONCOLOUR GRADING
PurposeMaking the image rightGiving the image character
CriterionObjective — measurableSubjective — discussed with the director
ToolsExposure, contrast, white balanceLUTs, HSL, curves, regional work
ReferenceScopesCalibrated display and the eye
OrderFirstAfter

The reason the order is fixed is mathematical, not aesthetic. Grading is a transform that assumes its input is in a particular place: a LUT is written on the assumption that middle grey sits at a particular code value. A LUT applied to an uncorrected image works from a false assumption, and its result becomes unpredictable. That is almost always the reason the same LUT gives different results on two different shots.

Measuring instruments

The correction stage can be objective because it relies on measurement, not on the eye. There are four basic instruments, and each answers a different question.

THE FOUR SCOPES AND THE QUESTION EACH ANSWERS

SCOPEWHAT IT SHOWSTHE QUESTION IT ANSWERS
WaveformLuminance from left to right across the frameIs exposure right, is anything clipping?
RGB paradeA separate waveform for each of the three channelsIs there a colour cast; is neutral really neutral?
VectorscopeHue and saturation, on a circleWhere have the colours drifted; is skin tone on the line?
HistogramPixel count per luminance levelHow are the tones distributed?

The most direct instrument for white-balance correction is the RGB parade: on a surface that should be neutral, the traces of the three channels must sit at the same height. This is the visual counterpart of the von Kries gains described in section 2 — you adjust the gains applied to the three channels until the three traces line up.

THE LIMIT OF THE SCOPES

Scopes are the referee in the correction stage, not in the grading stage. The vectorscope's skin-tone line is a reference, not a rule; when a deliberately cool or warm look is built, skin tone departs from that line, and that is not an error. Trying to obey the scopes in grading too ends with every job looking like every other.

Resolve's colour architecture

DaVinci Resolve has three routes for colour management, and the difference between them is at which point, and how much, the source file is transformed.

YRGB — no colour management. Whatever comes in is worked on directly. Simple, but bringing different sources together is done by hand.

DaVinci YRGB Color Managed (RCM) — input, working and output spaces are defined; Resolve performs the transforms itself.

ACES — the industry standard, scene-referred pipeline. In through an IDT, out through an ODT.

The official definition of DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate

Blackmagic defines this space as two components: DaVinci Wide Gamut (DWG), which sets the gamut, and the DaVinci Intermediate (DI) transfer function, which sets the distribution of brightness. This separation is a direct application of the three-part definition in section 6.

DaVinci Wide Gamut primaries (CIE 1931 xy)

A = 0.0075    B = 7.0    C = 0.07329248    M = 10.44426855

Blackmagic reports that 18% grey maps to 0.336043 and that the curve encodes more than 9.1 stops above grey. When I apply the formula independently with the constants above, 18% grey comes out at exactly 0.336043 — so the calculation is verified. This also cross-checks section 5, where I applied the same method to the F-Log curves.

ORIGINAL DERIVATION · FROM F-LOG2 TO DWG

When you shoot F-Log2 and convert to DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate in Resolve, the working space offers 0.78 stops more log encoding in the highlights and 1.56 stops less in the shadows.

The meaning of this should not be exaggerated: on the shadow side, DI's log segment ends earlier and hands over to the linear segment, so the data is not clipped, it is encoded more coarsely.

But if you are going to work on fine tonal transitions in the deepest shadows of F-Log2, the transform itself costs some resolution there. For a job that will open up the shadows in dark scenes, a working space that encodes deeper shadows could be considered instead of DWG.

On the gamut side the situation is comfortable: F-Gamut's area is 1.89 times BT.709's, DWG's is 3.38 times. So every colour F-Log2 can record fits inside DWG with room to spare, and no negative-component problem arises. That is precisely why DWG was designed with imaginary primaries.

Choosing between RCM and ACES

Both solve the same problem, with different priorities. DWG is designed to give good results when used together with the DaVinci DRT; if RCM is in use, it is the most suitable working space. What sets ACES apart is that it is an interchange standard: it guarantees that the image is interpreted the same way across different studios, different software and different years. AP0 is designed to cover the entire visible spectrum; AP1 is closer to BT.709 and BT.2020 and is used as the working space. The white point of both is 0.32168 / 0.33767 — not D65; this is specific to ACES. The practical distinction is this: if you work alone or with a small team and your output is broadcast or web, RCM produces less friction. On a job with multiple studios, VFX and a long archive life, ACES being the standard turns into an advantage.

The difference between a LUT and a CST

Both appear to perform a colour-space transform, but they are different things.

A LUT (look-up table) is a table: it maps input colour values to precomputed output values. Intermediate values are found by interpolation. A 3D LUT is typically a grid such as 33×33×33 — finite and discrete, in other words.

A CST (Color Space Transform) is a calculation: it applies the mathematical transform between the source gamma and gamut and the target gamma and gamut on the fly. There is no grid, and therefore no interpolation error.

The difference shows at the extremes. A LUT's grid cannot represent values that spill beyond the input range; values at the bright end of a log recording are clipped when they fall outside the grid. A CST has no such limit. That is why the CST is the right tool for the technical transform and the LUT for the aesthetic look.

The rule that follows: a LUT is not grading. A LUT is either a transform or a starting look; grading is deliberate, shot-specific intervention.

Bit depth and chroma subsampling

These are two separate things that are often confused. Bit depth is how many levels each channel carries: 8-bit 256, 10-bit 1024 levels. The possible combinations of three channels become 16.7 million versus 1.07 billion. This is what lowers the risk of banding in soft gradients — sky, skin, plain walls — under heavy colour correction.

4:2:2 and 4:2:0 are not bit depth; they are how many times more sparsely colour information is sampled than luminance. 4:2:2 keeps horizontal colour resolution twice as high as 4:2:0; in skin isolation, green screen, HSL selection and secondary correction, that is exactly where the difference is felt. Recall the 16-stop F-Log2 range from section 5: that range is distributed over the bit depth. Spreading 16 stops over 10 bits means an average of 64 code values per stop. Spreading the same curve over 8 bits drops it to 16 codes per stop — which is why log recording is useless at 8-bit.

WHAT THIS SECTION LEAVES OUT

The difference between serial and parallel nodes in Resolve's node graph, and the debate over whether gamut compression should be applied in the IDT or the ODT, were not covered in this version. The latter is still contested; the sources were surveyed but no agreed answer was found. For the order of the pipeline inside the camera itself, see section 9.

The order of the pipeline

The order of the jobs an image signal processor (ISP) does is not arbitrary. Each stage takes the output of the one before it as input, and a later stage can magnify the flaw of an earlier one. The single principle behind the order can be summarised like this: each operation is placed where it will not magnify the flaw of the operation before it.

The canonical order

The fifteen-stage sequence below is the order documented by an open-source ISP implementation, and it reflects the general consensus in the industry.

White balance is a per-channel gain (the von Kries transform of section 2). In the CFA domain each pixel already belongs to a single channel, so the gain can be applied directly. Had it been applied after demosaicing, the estimated values would have been produced with the wrong channel ratios — the interpolation would have been done from unbalanced data.

The same reasoning is even stronger for black level: if the black level is not corrected properly, the RGB channel values are misread by the white-balance algorithm and the wrong gain is computed. That is why it sits at position 1.

WHY NOISE REDUCTION APPEARS TWICE

THE MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL IN THE ORDER

There are two separate noise-reduction passes in the pipeline: at position 5 in the CFA domain, and at position 13 in the RGB domain. The reason is this: the noise leaving the sensor is uncorrelated — each pixel is noisy on its own. Because demosaicing estimates the missing channels from the neighbours, it adds spatial and chromatic correlation to that uncorrelated noise. Correlated noise is far harder to remove, because neighbouring pixels now move together and the algorithm mistakes that for real texture. So the bulk of the noise has to be cleaned before demosaicing. It is also cheap: CFA data is one third the size of demosaiced data, so the clean-up at this stage is done with roughly one third of the computation. The second pass at position 13 collects what is left from the first and the noise raised by the later stages (gamma and tone mapping in particular). The raw file is different: the noise reduction setting in the menu is not written into the raw (RAF) file; both passes apply only to the JPEG/HEIF image and video the camera produces, and the software that opens the raw file does its own noise reduction.

WHY THE COLOUR MATRIX COMES AFTER DEMOSAICING

The colour correction matrix is a 3×3 transform and requires all three channels to be present at the same point in its input. Because each point in the CFA domain carries a single channel, the matrix cannot be applied there. This is one of the rare mandatory constraints in the order — the others are preferences; this one is not.

WHY SHARPENING COMES LAST

Sharpening boosts high frequencies and does not discriminate: it enlarges real detail, artefacts and noise alike. Applied early, it turns the faint zipper or ringing artefacts left by demosaicing into high-contrast halos. That is why it is placed after all of the artefact-removal stages.

The sharpness–noise tension of section 5 becomes clear from this vantage point: the sharpening at position 14 works on the output of the noise reduction at position 13. Reduce noise reduction and sharpening amplifies more noise; increase it and there is no texture left to sharpen. Because the two are consecutive, they feed each other directly.

Which stage each camera setting falls into

The mapping below relates the settings in the camera menu to the canonical order.

CAMERA SETTING → PIPELINE STAGE

THE PRACTICAL SUMMARY OF THE DISTINCTION

The settings fall into two groups. The reversible ones are the interpretation layer the camera applies after the raw file is frozen: white balance, noise reduction, film simulation, tone, colour, sharpness. The only irreversible ones are the DR modes: they decide the gain at which the sensor is read, that is, the raw data itself.

This is why DR400 has a different status from the rest in the Chrome Color recipe of section 5: colour, shadow tone and sharpness can be changed afterwards; the effect of DR400 cannot, because the raw data was read at two stops lower gain: both the highlight headroom and the shadow noise were fixed at the moment of capture.

WHAT THIS SECTION LEAVES OUT

The order above is the industry's canonical one; Fujifilm does not publish the order of its own X-Processor pipeline. The mapping of menu settings to stages is an inference based on this canonical order and on the observed behaviour of the settings, not documented fact. Making it certain would require surveying the X-Processor patents and reverse-engineering camera JPEGs with controlled tests — in particular, whether the film simulation is applied before or after gamma is a question that can be settled by measurement.

Case study: the green of The Matrix

The Matrix (1999) is the most studied example of colour being tied to narrative, and it offers an instructive case for recipe design. This section takes up the film not to praise it but to take apart, backwards, how a look was built — because the same method works for every other look.

Two worlds, two colours

The film's colour scheme is a binary code: scenes set inside the simulation are pushed toward green, scenes set in the real world toward blue. The reason for the green, in cinematographer Bill Pope's own words, is simple: they wanted the world of the Matrix to be repellent, and they agreed that the most repellent colour was green. The secondary association is strong too — the green of old phosphor screens, the colour of the digital.

THE FIRST LESSON FOR RECIPE DESIGN

The choice of colour here is not an aesthetic preference but a function. Green was not chosen because “green looks nice”; it was chosen so that it would produce unease in the viewer and let the viewer tell the two worlds apart without thinking. When giving a recipe a name and a character, the question to ask is not “which colour is pleasant” but “what should this colour do”.

How the green was achieved

The original 1999 film was timed optically — no digital intermediate (DI) was used. The green was built not in a single stage but in four separate, overlapping layers:

1. Production design — the sets were physically painted green   2. Lighting — green gels were fitted to tungsten and Kino Flo fixtures   3. In front of the lens — green filters were used in some scenes   4. Printing — a little more green was added in colour timing

Some secondary sources add a fifth layer: they say bleach bypass was applied to the negative of the scenes set inside the Matrix. The ASC's article on the film, however, explains the green through filters, lighting and photochemical colour timing and does not mention bleach bypass; this layer should be treated as a disputed claim rather than established fact.

What bleach bypass is

In colour film processing, the bleach step removes the silver from the emulsion, leaving only the colour dyes. When that step is skipped or shortened, the silver stays in the emulsion and sits on top of the colour dyes. The result is a black-and-white image superimposed on a colour image.

Its visual counterpart comes down to three things: saturation drops, contrast rises markedly, grain increases. Fujifilm offers the digital counterpart of this process as a film simulation under the name ETERNA Bleach Bypass, and in its own description notes that the effect “became widespread in science-fiction films set in the future and in psychological thrillers”. Among the colour simulations, this one has the lowest saturation.

THE SECOND LESSON FOR RECIPE DESIGN — THE MOST USEFUL ONE

There are two ways to build the Matrix look on a Fujifilm body. If the bleach bypass claim is right, the backbone of the look is a process rather than a colour, and you should start from ETERNA Bleach Bypass, with the green as a thin layer on top. The route the ASC describes gives the green through lighting, filters and colour timing; its counterpart is to start from a low-contrast simulation and add the green with a white balance shift. The Matrix recipes in Color X follow this second route: a white balance shift on top of ETERNA or Classic Chrome.

The generalised form is this: before imitating a look, find the photochemical process behind that look; then start from the film simulation that imitates that process. Colour shifts are left for last. When you do not start from the right simulation, whatever you do with the shifts, the relationship between contrast and saturation will not hold.

The mathematics of the green shift

Fujifilm's white-balance shift grid has two axes: Red ↔ Cyan and Blue ↔ Yellow. Green is not a direct axis on this grid; it lies between cyan and yellow. So pushing toward green means taking both axes negative:

green = cyan + yellow = (−Red) + (−Blue)

DOSESHIFT
slight green−2 R / −2 B
pronounced−4 R / −4 B
heavy−6 R / −5 B

For the blue world, the opposite direction: +Blue, Red slightly negative.

The counterpart in section 2 is direct: a white-balance shift is deliberately moving the von Kries gains away from neutral. The camera does not render what should be neutral as neutral; it gets it wrong on purpose.

Two recipes as starting points

The values below are untested starting points derived from the sources above. They will need adjustment to the body and the scene; here the reasons matter more than the values.

The point to notice: both recipes start from the same film simulation and part ways only in white balance and the tone settings. That is no coincidence — in the film, too, the two worlds went through the same negative process and parted ways only in colour timing. This is the structure to follow when building a family of recipes: a shared backbone, with small, meaningful departures on top of it.

The third lesson: there is no single “Matrix look”

The film has three separate official colour states, and they differ visibly from one another.

THREE COLOUR STATES OF THE SAME FILM

VERSIONMETHODRESULT
1999 theatrical printOptical timingMeasured green, varying from scene to scene
2008 Blu-rayRegradeHeavy green everywhere, for consistency with the sequels
2018 4K UHDReversal under Pope's supervisionClose to the theatrical print; the heavy green removed

The heavy green of the 2008 release was reversed in 2018 under Bill Pope's direction, after it drew reactions from viewers, and restored to something close to the original theatrical presentation. Which version plays on streaming platforms today varies from platform to platform.

THE THIRD LESSON FOR RECIPE DESIGN

A film's “look” is not a fixed object; it depends on who graded it, when, and for which screen. The Matrix green people remember is most probably the exaggerated green of the 2008 Blu-ray — not the version the director and cinematographer approved.

The practical consequence: when writing a recipe inspired by a film, the version it was inspired by should be stated. Saying “The Matrix” is not enough; the reference in the user's head and the frame you were looking at may differ. On the app side, this is a small but honest detail to add to the recipe description.

WHAT THIS SECTION LEAVES OUT

The starting values above were not tested. The way to verify them is clear: shoot the same scene with these settings and compare the colour distribution of the resulting frame with a frame from the film on a vectorscope. The digital intermediate workflow of The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions — one of the first large-scale DI applications in cinema history — was also not covered in this version.

Sources

Primary sources were given priority. Fujifilm's own technical documents were downloaded and parsed directly; the calculations in section 5 were made from the constants in those files.

Two compilations supplied by the author (among them Osmanlı ve Leonardo Çağında Ressamların Renk Dili) provided topic headings and a trail of terminology; none of their claims was carried over directly, and those whose sources could be located were verified against the primary sources above.

This is a technical study written for Color X. Measurements and derivations are based on manufacturer data sheets; the sources are listed at the end of the article.
